Solutus Legal Search has been exclusively engaged by our client, a highly successful incubator and accelerator hub focused on developing the next generation of technology in the healthcare—especially medical device—sector, to assist in hiring an intelligent, motivated, and experienced Patent Agent.

Reporting to and collaborating with the VP, Intellectual Property and Legal Affairs, and working closely with business and engineering teams led by a visionary founder, prolific inventor, and CEO, this hire will:

  • Embed with the engineers at each portfolio company and develop productive working relationships with those engineers to identify and protect IP rights.
  • Actively participate in meetings and communications among engineers and outside patent counsel.
  • Participate in invention harvesting, disclosure meetings, and early stage drafting of patent disclosures and applications.
  • Work with outside counsel on preparing written disclosures and facilitating outside counsel’s drafting and prosecution of applications.
  • Work closely with the innovation hub CEO, portfolio company CEOs, and executive teams, and earn their respect by demonstrating strong understanding of technologies and providing pragmatic, business-minded counsel on IP legal issues.

 

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • BS or higher degree(s) in relevant engineering field(s) (e.g., mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering).
  • USPTO admitted.
  • 3-8 years’ experience as a patent agent (patent application drafting and prosecution and working closely with engineers).
  • Prior in-house experience preferred.
  • Prior experience working with outside patent counsel.
  • Passion for and strong ability to handle diverse types of technology.
  • Excellent mental plasticity and quick learner of new technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative approach to problem-solving, and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including teammates and business team members across the company and its portfolio companies as well as with outside counsel.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation is targeted at a base salary range of $150,000 to $200,000, plus equity and benefits. Base salary and overall compensation will be determined by number of years of directly relevant experience and history of success.
