I’d like to send her a note praising her for it. Is that weird or should I let it go?

The thank you note is a must after every job interview. This requirement also holds true for informational interviews and any situation where another professional has given you his/her time or acted to your career benefit. Most thank yous are perfunctory – which is generally acceptable in today’s work world. As long as it arrives in a timely manner, with no typos or blathering diatribes, it will safely preserve your reputation as a candidate with proper follow through. 

But occasionally, a professional will express his/her gratitude so thoughtfully and eloquently, the effort stands out. And inspires the recipient to offer praise for a refreshing approach. Is it weird or inappropriate to do so?

Going the extra mile as a professional isn’t an everyday occurrence – especially when it comes to the little things like writing a thank you note. So if you are impressed by this lawyer’s prose, I encourage you to communicate that sentiment. The feedback will be supportive, encouraging and make him/her feel good about the thoughtfulness. And will reinforce that the special effort is valued. It will make you feel good too.

When a professional goes outside the norm…in a good way, it’s commendable. And while it isn’t common to praise someone for a good thank you note, there’s nothing weird or inappropriate with recognizing him/her for a job well done. So don’t be afraid to go outside your norm…in a good way, and express your own appreciation for a job well done.
